日本語には「ひらがな」「カタカナ」「漢字」の３種類の文字があります。
複数の文字の種類を使い分ける言語は珍しいです。
しかし、ひらがなだけでも読むことができれば、コミュニケーションにおいてはかなり助けになります。

There are 3 different type of chracters "Hiragana" "Katakana" "Kanji" in Japanese.
It's kinda rare to use several type of characters by situations.
However, if you could read even only Hiragana, it would be very helpful for communication :)
